St Vincent and Grenadines is an island country in the Lesser Antilles chain of the Caribbean Sea. Its total territory is 389 square kilometers. There is the main island of Saint Vincent and the northern two-thirds of the grenadines. Its capital and largest city is Kingstown and official language is English. This country got independence from the United Kingdom on 27 October 1979. Its currency is East Caribbean Dollar. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is divided into six parishes. Five are on the St Vincent and sixth is the Grenadines. These parishes are Charlotte, Grenadines, Saint Andrew, Saint David, Saint George, and Saint Patrick. Agriculture, particularly banana production is the most important sector of the economy of this nation. But the tourism sector has a substantial potential for growth.
History
Christopher Columbus was the one who almost certainly visited and named St. Vincent in the year 1498. The nation comprises of Volcanic Island of St. Vincent along with five islands of the Grenadine group, among which Mustique is the most well known. St. Vincent and the Grenadines became a part of the British colony of the Windward Islands for the year 1833 to 1958 and of the West Indies Federation for the year 1958 to 1962. It was in 1863 when the island became a British colony. Self-government was achieved in the year 1969 and in 1979 it got it’s independence. For the year 1972 to 1974 and 1984 to 2000 James Fitz Allen Mitchell was the Prime Minister.

Sports
St Vincent and Grenadines waters offer some of the best sailing in the Caribbean. One can get sunfish and sailfish at most island hotels. Snorkeling and Scuba diving is also a major activity. Diving around St. Vincent is an excellent option. Windsurfing is also popular here and some companies provide rentals and professional instructions. Tennis is also played here. The Kingstown Tennis Club has lighted courts and it allows temporary membership to visitors.
Cricket
In the West Indies, the first cricket match between colonies was played in 1865. In 1900, a triangular series was held between Demerara, Barbados, and Trinidad. Jamaica started participating after World War II, because increased availability of air travel. In the 1960s, Leeward and Windward Islands joined the competition for Shell Shield, presented each year by the Shell Oil Company. St Vincent and The Grenadines has been designated as a stand-by venue International Cricket Committee (ICC) World Cup Matches 2007. The warm up matches of England, Australia, Bermuda, and Zimbabwe will also be held here in St Vincent.
