Saint Lucia is one of the islands in the East Caribbean on the boundary Atlantic Ocean. It is considered as one of the smallest nations in the American continent considering the area, which is around 620 sq. km. and is ranked 193rd in overall international ranking. It is a part of Windward Islands, which were named by Roman Catholic and was first invaded by the Europeans around 1500. It was later on taken over by the France and signed a treatise with the Caribbean islands as a whole to rule over it. Still English is a common language here and the government that is ruling is the parliamentary democracy commonwealth Realm. It had its Queen Elizabeth II as its monarch. They gained independence from the United Kingdom on 22nd February 1979. It has less population, around 160,765 according to the 2005 census and the per capita income is around $5950.
History
The island was discovered by Europeans in the 16th century. The first town, Soufriereit was built by the French in 1746. several attempts were made by British and it made an attempt to capture the island at the Battle of Cul de Sac in the year 1778. It was only in the year 1814 when after a number of conflicts St.Lucia was confirmed as a British colony by the Treaty of Paris. Self-government was achieved by St.Lucia in the year 1967 and it was only in 1979 when it became fully independent. For the year 1964- 1979 and 1982- 1996 John Compton was the Prime Minister.

Saint Lucia has more interests in athletic sports like basketball, tennis, football and even Cricket. There are various other sports that they are interested in and have participated in too. Football is the most important sport in Saint Lucia, more than any other sport. The St. Lucia football association is the one controlling the national team of St. Lucia. The national team is called as Saint Lucia National football Team. The sports like the tennis and basketball are also gaining popularity all over this island.
Cricket
Saint Lucia has a very good cricket team. It is also an important sport and has the same significance as that of football. It has not participated in many international series and competitions. They have tried making a mark in the International cricket ranking but unfortunately it still hasn’t shown the required results.
