History
Antigua was named after Santa Maria la Antigua, Saint of Seville by Christopher Columbus when he landed on Antigua in 1493. England occupied and made Antigua its colony in the year 1632 and Barbuda in the year 1666. The first sugar plantation was established in the year 1684 by Sir Christopher Codrington. African slaves were brought to work on the sugar plantation. A naval base was built on Antigua by Horatio Nelson in the year 1784. Slavery was abolished in 1834. The islands formed part of the British colony of the Leeward Islands form the year 1871 to 1956. It was in 1981 when Vere Bird of Antiguan Labor Party (ALP) led Antigua an Barbuda to independence on November 1st, 1981. The country consists of the islands Antigua, Barbuda and a third uninhabited island named Redonda.
