Introduction
Anguilla is a British Dependency in the Caribbean. The island’s capital is The Valley. The total land area is 155 square kilometers with a population of about 13,500 according to 2006 estimate. Its official language is English. Its currency is East Caribbean Dollar, but the US dollar is also widely accepted. According to some people, Columbus sited the island in 1493. The name Anguilla is derived from the word “eel” in Spanish which is Anguilla. The word is chosen because of the island’s eel-like shape. Anguilla is famous for its fabulous ecologically important coral reefs. Apart from the main island of Anguilla, the territory includes several other islands and cays. These are Anguillita, Dog Island, Prickly Pear Cays, Scrub Island, Seal Island, and Sombrero or Hat Island.

Anguilla’s thin, arid soil is unsuitable for agriculture. The main industries are tourism and fishing. Offshore companies have been playing an increasingly important role in this country’s economy.
