Introduction
Situated in the capital city on the west, Kensington Oval, Bridgetown is located on the island of Barbados. This stadium is also known as “The Oval”. This stadium is primarily used for Cricket. It is one of the oldest stadiums in the West Indies region. With a history of about 120 years, the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown is referred to as “The Mecca” of cricket. The major attraction in “The Oval” is its large stands, with total number of ten stands. However, out of these 10 stands only three remain intact. The name of these three stands is The Hall and Griffith, the Mitchie Hewitt and the new Carib Beer-sponsored Stands. Most of the stands are under construction, as they would be used for hosting the 2007 World Cup Cricket. However, the new proposed Kensington Stadium will have a seating capacity of about 28000 persons. This stadium will be used for hosting the 2007 World Cup Cricket.
Contests at Kensington Oval
Kensington Oval, Bridgetown has hosted many games. Though it is primarily a Cricket Ground still it has also hosted some non-cricket events like Football, Hockey and some Beauty Contests. However, cricket at “The Oval” began in 1882. The first international Cricket match that was held in this ground was in 1895. The first Test Match that was held in this ground was in 1930. This match was played between West Indies and England. Since then there have been 43 Test Matches that have been played.
Records at this ground
Till now there hasn’t been any record that has been made in this ground. However, it has a beautiful cricketing history. There have been 42 Test Matches that have been played in this stadium and out of these matches West Indies Cricket Team has won 21 matches. However, this ground is still waiting for some impeccable records.
