Gros Islet is the newest town in Saint Lucia. It has been recently promoted from a village to a town. Beausejour Stadium Test Cricket ground is situated in Gros Islet. Gros Islet is the administrative center of the Gros Island Quarter, a region of Saint Lucia. It includes the island’s northernmost point, Cap Point. Gros islet lies north of Castries, the capital of Saint Lucia. It features The Friday Night Street Party, which is a major tourist attraction. The Friday Night Street Party is also known as Jump-up. It encompasses several blocks, cordoned off with stalls of street vendors. One can buy everything, right from steamed fish to barbeque chicken in these stalls. Saint Lucia’s own Piton beer can also be purchased from these vendors. Here, tourists and locals dance to the sound of calypso, Zouk, reggae, and R&B in a central cross-section in small streets.
The Rodney Bay area features a different picture. It caters mostly to tourism populace and its areas have shops, malls, restaurants, and nightclubs. The land development costs are very high in the Rodney Bay area. Other quarters of Saint Lucia are Anse-la-Raye, Castries, Choiseul, Dauphin, Dennery, Laborie, Micound, Praslin, Soufriere, and Vieux Fort.
Cricket in Gros Islet
Gros Islet has a cricket ground called Beausejour Stadium. It was completed in 2002 and accommodates 12000 people. This stadium is a home venue for the Windward Island cricket team. First One Day International (ODI) was played here on June 8, 2002 between West Indies and New Zealand. The first Test match was played here on 20-24 June 2003 between West Indies and Sri Lanka. Beausejour stadium will be one of the venues for the 2007 Cricket World Cup. By that time, the stadium’s seating capacity will be increased to 20000. This stadium will host group C matches between New Zealand, England, Kenya, and Canada as well as one of the semi-finals.
