Introduction
The World Cup fever has gripped the world. Every one who is even remotely interested in Cricket is counting days. The host nation for the World cup is no exception. West Indies at the World Cup of Cricket 2007 is getting itself ready for the battle. It is going to be clash of Titans.
A cluster of about 7000 islands, inlets and reefs make the Caribbean Islands. The islands are independent states but they take part in the competitions as one country that is called West Indies or ‘The Windies’
West Indies played their first official international match in 1926 and in 1928 they got their Test Status. Initial years saw West Indies with limited success but by the 1970s they were declared as unofficial world champions. They had world’s best fast bowlers and some very fine batsmen.
World cup achievements
West Indies has participated in the World Cup since 1975. The West Indies won the first ever World Cup in 1975 defeating Australia. The proud captain was Clive Lloyd. The good fortune continued four years later in the second World Cup. They defeated England by 92 runs. Again the captain was a very happy man Clive Lloyd. In 1983 World Cup they were stumped by then underdogs India. West Indies has not lifted the Cup since 1979. They have not been able to perform well in the World Cup. However, the team looks positive and since West Indies is the host for the games. West Indies at the World Cup of Cricket 2007 looks ahead to win the coveted trophy again. Currently the West Indies’ world ranking is 8 and for the world cup they are at 6th seeding.
