Introduction
The Ireland cricket team is a national cricket team, which represents both political entities on the island of Ireland namely the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Irish Cricket Union was not elected to the International Cricket Council (ICC) until 1993 because of some political difficulties. Ireland has qualified for the World Cup 2007 for the first time. Ireland’s cricket history goes to 1980s, including a tour of North America in 1888. A Northern Ireland team, composed of players born only in Northern Ireland, played three matches at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Team Ireland's World Cup Performance
Team Ireland has had a full of activity phase in their build up to the World Cup 2007. Right from April, they participated in a newly expanded C&G Trophy, playing nine English county sides. Ireland recorded one win at Bristol against Gloucestershire in their 9 matches, although they lost the remainder. They started their Intercontinental Cup, with a five-wicket win against Namibia at Clontarf, from 17th to 20th May 2006. Ireland's first official ODI (One Day International) match was played at Belfast against England on 13 June 2006.
Team Ireland's 2007 World Cup Performance Preview
Team Ireland is in the group D of World Cup 2007, with other group members namely Pakistan, West Indies, and Zimbabwe. Team Ireland is having ODI status. In August 2006, the Irish Cricket Union selected their squad for the 2007 World Cup. Trent Johnston is the captain, with other players Andre Botha, Jeremy Bray, Kenny Carroll, Peter Gillespie, Kyle McCallan, John Mooney, Paul Mooney, Eoin Morgan, Kevin O’Brian, Niall O’Brian, William Porterfield, Boyd Rankin, Dave Langford-Smith, and Andrew White. It would be very interesting to watch the performance of Team Ireland at their first world cup, and to see how they progress to the next stage.
