West Indies v Pakistan

13 March 2007 - WEST INDIES vs PAKISTAN, Sabina Park, Kingston, JAMAICA

The World Cup of Cricket 2007 kicks off!
The World Cup of Cricket 2007 got underway on 13th March 2007 at the picturesque Sabina Park with a potentially explosive clash between two highly talented but equally unpredictable teams, Pakistan and the West Indies. Both teams have strong batting line ups and a weak bowling attack. So, the one who batted well would eventually go on to win the game.

Inzy gets the “toss” right

Inzamam Ul Haq, the Pakistan skipper called it right at the toss and promptly elected to field on a pitch that had a tinge of green grass. His idea was to take advantage of this to make in-roads early in the much vaunted West Indian batting line up. West Indies started with their trusted opening pair of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Chris Gayle.

Pakistan bowlers are on the money…

Umar Gul, a last minute replacement for Shoaib Akhtar, opened the bowling for Pakistan and immediately got into the stride having the destructive Gayle out caught behind for 2. He could have had Ramnaresh Sarwan next ball had it not been for butter fingers shown by Younis Khan, the Pakistan deputy skipper in the slips. Sarwan, after a shaky start, got his act going with some blazing shots of Rana Naved Ul Hasan, who looked completely out of sorts. Sarwan and Chanderpaul steadied the ship when terror struck! With the score on 64, Iftikar Rao Anjum, the first change bowler got Chanderpaul to edge one behind. Younis Khan then made amends by catching Sarwan this time of Iftikar with the score on 77. Pakistan was on top and visions of a West Indian collapse were looming large on the horizon.

Samuels and Lara consolidate but Smith rules ….

Two quick wickets had dented the Windies. But their trump card and skipper Brian Lara along with Marlon Samuels then began a repair job. They mixed caution with aggression to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Samuels was especially brutal against Danish Kaneria, the leg spinner, smashing him for two fours and a six in an over. He reached fifty with a towering six off Mohd. Hafeez. Just as they had taken control of the situation, Lara under edged one to the keeper, Samuels needlessly holed one out in the deep and Denesh Ramadin looked hopeless at the crease on his birthday! And, the scoreboard read 183-6 at 44.5 over of the inning.

In walked Dwayne Smith to join Dwayne Bravo, the last of recognized batsmen. Smith soon launched himself into the attack tonking a couple of massive sixes and a string of boundaries to take the score to 223 before he skied one in the deep, a superb innings of 32 off just 15 balls to give the innings the momentum. Some more runs and wickets later, Corey Collymore smashed the last ball of the innings for a six. West Indies 241-9, a respectable score considering they reached hundred in the 29th over. Inftikar with 3 and Gul score was with 2 wickets were the best bowlers on show.

The Pakistan reply
The target was not a big one for this batting line up but the pitch was playing some tricks. It was all set for an interesting run chase. And it started explosively. Imran Nazir smashed Darren Powell for a six over point on the second ball of the innings, edged the next one behind and new man Younis Khan edged one to the third man boundary. This one had all the makings of a classic! Then Powell and Jerome Taylor made early in-roads by getting Younis and Hafeez early, both out to a really poor shot selection. Pakistan’s scoreboard read 39-3 in the middle of the 11th over of their inning and in desperate situation.

Inzy and Yousuf strengthen position but…

The result of the game now depended entirely on most trusted and experienced pair of Inzaman and Mohd. Yousuf. Both started cautiously but then steadied the score with a solid 60 run partnership. Both played with great composure and selective aggression to slowly bail Pakistan out of trouble.

Smith sizzles as Shoaib battles it out

Dwayne Smith with the bowl in hand then wreaked havoc, this time with the ball having Yousuf edge one behind. Then he trapped Inzy leg before and had Kamran Akmal slash one at point to Bravo to leave Pakistan in absolute doldrums at 116-6. Shoaib Malik however battled on with a gutsy 62 from 54 balls when Collymore got him caught by Chanderpaul.

Windies script a famous win!

Bravo polished off the tail leaving Pakistan well short of the required total. Pakistan finished with 187 all out in 47.2 overs, 54 runs short. A convincing win for the West Indies and a big set back for Pakistan.

Man of the Match:

Dwayne Smith, for a breezy 32 of 15 balls and then shining with the ball as well with 3 for 36. A truly all round performance from the youngster.

Result : West Indies won by 54 runs
