Cricketing Drama at Providence
Wednesday, March 28th witnessed one of the most thrilling encounters in the World Cup, 2007. It was the Super 8 match between Sri Lanka and South Africa. For the Proteas, it was crucial to win this match as they had come into the Super 8 with no points against their name. The match had an intense climax, leading to a nail-biting finish.
Lanka win Toss
Sri Lanka began the match on a positive note and won the toss. Skipper Mahela Jayawardene had no hesitation in electing to bat. Sri Lanka seemed to be following the conventional strategy of posting a total on the board and then pressurizing the opposition.
Lankan Batting Falters
Sri Lanka failed to capitalize on the advantage of winning the toss and did not display an impressive batting performance. The team looked forward to their opening pair of Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya for an explosive start. However, this did not materialize as Tharanga was back in the pavilion at a personal score of 12 runs. Jayasuriya too could not make a significant contribution and was dismissed on 26 leaving Sri Lanka placed at 45 for 2. It was expected that Jayawardene would play a Captain’s knock and help his team’s cause. However, neither the Captain nor the Vice-captain Sangakkara could help to steady the Sri Lankan ship and both were dismissed early leaving the team dangerously poised at 90 for 4. It looked as if Sri Lanka would be bundled out even before the 200-mark. However, there was a determined partnership between Tillakaratne Dilshan and Russel Arnold that propelled Sri Lanka to 189 for 5 wkts at the end of the 45th over. Dilshan was out in the 46th over at the score of 58 runs from 76 balls with Srilanka now at 195 for 6 wkts and Arnold got out in the 49th over at the score of 50 runs from 73 balls with Sri Lanka at 208 for 7 wkts(48.2) and then Langeveldt took two more wickets in the 49th over and in the last over of the inning, Muralitharan was run out ,leaving Sri Lanka all out at 209 in 49.3 overs.
The South African bowling was upto the mark and did not allow the Sri Lankan batmen to dominate them. All the bowlers were extremely disciplined and followed a good line and length, restricting the Sri Lankan batsmen to low scores. Apart from the bowling, the ground fielding by South Africa was also top class, which allowed the bowlers to maintain the pressure on the batsmen. One of the highlights of the Proteas fielding was the brilliant piece of run-out by ace fielder Herschelle Gibbs who dived on the stumps to dismiss Chamara Silva.
Proteas Reply
The Sri Lankan challenge of 209 never seemed daunting for the South Africans and it looked as if the South Africans would cruise easily to a win. The South African opener, AB de Villiers was dismissed early. Thereafter, skipper Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis took on the responsibility of taking their team home. Smith scored 59 runs while Kallis scored 86 runs. at the end of the 32nd over, South Africa was 159 for 2 wkts, requiring 51 runs from 18 overs to win.It appeared that South Africa would reach home safely and soundly. But, cricket is a very fickle gamr
Scare for South Africa
The match suddenly changed its nature in the 45th over with South Africa placed at 206 for the loss of five wickets. With just 4 runs to win, South Africa looked to be in the driver’s seat and well set to win its Super 8 match. However, Sri Lankan bowler, Lasith Malinga had other plans. After Chaminda Vaas finished an over that did not yield too many runs for the Proteas, Malinga came in to rock the South Africans. In a sudden burst, Malinga picked up four wickets from 4 ballsto jolt the Proteas and reduce them to 207 for nine in 46.2 overs. Malinga first picked up the wicket of Shaun Pollock at 44.5 over followed by the wickets of Andre Hall at 44.6 over, Jacques Kallis at 46.1 over and Makhaya Ntini at 46.2 overcreating tremors in the Proteas camp. This frayed the South African nerves greatly and the match was suddenly converted into a thriller and Sri Lanka were now just one wicket away from an unlikely victory. It was the last Proteas pair that finally saw their team home. In the penultimate over of the South African inning, yhey required two runs to win and had one wicket in hand. The last pair of RJ Peterson and CK Langeveldt took the team to victory after Langeveldt smashed a four to win a thrilling contest. It was for the first time in World Cup history that any bowler had taken four wickets consecutively for any side. However, despite this valiant effort, Malinga could not save his team from losing.
Man of the Match
South Africa won the thriller by one wicket and earned two crucial points in the Super 8.
The man of the match of this thrilling contest was CK Langeveldt for his haul of 5 wickets and his crucial boundary that saw South Africa home.
