Bermuda v Sri Lanka

15 March 2007- Bermuda v Sri Lanka , Port of Spain, Trinidad

Lions vs the Lambs
Group B action got underway at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad with potential World Cup contenders Sri Lanka and the World Cup debutants Bermuda facing each other. It was no competition really but everyone was looking forward to Bermuda’s performance.

Jayawardene wins the toss

Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and elected to bat first. The idea behind this decision was to put up a bat Bermuda out of the game….

Opening bowler Kevin Hurdle hit Sanath Jayasuriya on the finger because of which the opener required physio treatment. Hurdle then took 14 balls to complete his 2nd over (3rd over of the match), where he threw a flurry of 6 no balls and two wide balls. Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga, blazed away to 62 in 8.3 overs before Mukuddem got rid of Jayasuriya for 22. Tharanga fell soon after for 30. From 78 for 2, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara added 150 for the third wicket. Chamara Silva also joined in the excitement by scoring 55 runs not out off 45 balls. Sri Lanka bulldozed their way to 321 for 6 in 50 overs, a daunting task for Bermuda.

Bermuda fumbles under pressure
The high score by the Sri Lankan team set up an impossible target of 6.44 runs an over for the Bermuda team. Bermuda crumbled under the pressure and put up a poor show. The players had to return to the pavilion 78 all out after facing 24.4 overs giving Sri Lanka a win by 243. This match has gone down in the history of World Cup cricket as the match with the second biggest margin of defeat. Lionell Cann and David Hemp were the only two Bermuda batsman to reach double figures. Farveez Maharoof took 4 wickets giving just 23 runs and proved to be the most lethal weapon Sri Lankan bowler Mutttiah Muralitharan got two wkts.

Bermuda tested us - Jayawardene

Man of the match Jayawardene said that the Bermuda bowlers had bowled really well except for a couple of wayward overs at the start. He further added that he and Sangakkara found it difficult but decided to keep wickets for the last 20 overs.

Sri Lanka just too good – Romaine the opening

Bermuda captain, Irwin Romaine commented that he and his team found Sri Lanka just too good for them. He also added that the opening bowlers Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga are among the best pair in the world and there was not much that his team could have do to battle their strong attack. He further expressed that his team suffered the biggest set back by dropping Jayawardene on the very first ball that he faced and he ended up scoring 85 runs of 90 balls.

Man of the match:

The Sri Lankan captain, Jayawardene took the man of the match trophy by scoring 85 runs off just 90 balls. He hit 6 fours and 2 sixes leading his team to a remarkable win.
