Ireland v Pakistan

17 March 2007 - Ireland v Pakistan , Kingston, Jamaica

The Dark horses v/s The Underdogs
Pakistan, considered as the dark horse of the World Cup and Ireland the rank newcomers in the international cricket was thought of as no competition. Thus everyone was prepared for a one sided contest between the two where maybe Pakistan would register few of the world records on their way towards mauling the Irish attack.

Ireland had their first taste of luck

The day began favoring the Irish team. The coin rolled in their favor and the Irish think tank opted to field first. The pitch contained enough moisture to support the pacers initially. The decision was termed as apt by the experts who considered batting conditions to be very difficult at the beginning of the day.

Irish bowlers led the rampage

The Irish bowlers justified the decision taken by their captain and led the charge right from the beginning of the innings. Langford Smith started the onslaught by taking the first Pakistani wicket of Mohammad Hafeez on the last ball of the 1st over with the Pakistan score of 7 runs. The next to match steps was William Rankin who struck through when Pakistan was on 15 runs by getting Yonis Khan out in the middle of the 4th over of the inning. William Rankin went on to become the most successful bowler of the Irish side by bagging 3 wickets for 32 runs in 9 overs.

The other bowlers AC Botha and McCallan followed suit by capturing two wickets each and DT Johnston and KJ O'Brain got 1 wicket each. However the bowling of the Irish team lacked discipline in few occasion as they swayed away from line and length to concede 23 wide balls.

Pakistani batsmen fell like a pack of cards

The Pakistani batsmen never seemed be on their own and were way away from behaving like a past champion. The opening batsman Hafeez fell in for 4 runs when the total score was 7. The next to go was veteran Younis Khan on a golden duck at 17 runs. Pakistan was deep down into trouble when Imran Nazir and Mohammad Yousuf made an attempt to resurrect the team from the slump. But they could not resist much as Mohammad Yousuf fell on 15 runs with a total score of 56 runs on the board. Then captain Inzamam-ul-Haq got out very cheaply and Imran Nazir got out on a score of 24 runs with Pakistan at 66 for 5 wickets.

The rest of the Pakistani batsmen showed no sense of responsibility and got out due to very poor shot selection. Kamran Akmal put some resistance with a 27 runs knock. Pakistan was all out at a meager total of 132 runs from 45.4 overs.

Spirited Irish batting
Although the target was low Ireland made a heavy weather of it. This time the opner JP Bray(Man of the Match in the match against Zimbabwe withhis 115 notout)-got out with Irelandat 7. However it is not always easy to put up against a murderous Pakistani bowling attack. The Irish batsmen never let the spirit die off and held their ground in the middle. NJ O’Brian stood tall among all the Irish batsmen by scoring 72 runs from 107 balls. His patient effort to stick to the wicket and see the opposition through earned him lots of accolades. The other batsmen to support him in the cause were William Portefield with 13 runs and KJ O’Brian with 16 not out runs. The rest of the Irish batting did not add much to the Irish total.

Duckworth-Lewis Method comes into play

At 27.3 overs with the Irish score at 81 for 4, the match was suspended due to rain.At this point,22.3 overs remaind and Ireland had 6 wivkets in hand.Percentage Resource available to Ireland at suspension of match is 47.5%
If rain does not stop, then the Irish have lost this much resourse and under the D-L Method the target would become(100-47.5)*131/100 roundedup = 69 runs and Ireland have scored 81 runs. So if the if the rain does not stop and as minimum 20 overs have been bowled, under the D-L method.Ireland have acrossed the target of 69 runs.

Good News, rain has stopped and 3 overs have been lost, resulting in Ireland losing 3% of their resource. Therefore revised target is (100-3)*131/100 rounded up = 128 runs.

So Ireland have to acheive 128 from 47 overs that is 47 runs more from 19.3 overs i.e Run Rate required 2.41 runs per over(Present Run Rate is 2.945 runs per over)

Pakistani bowlers could not work miracles

To save a total of 132 runs is always a Herculean task and the Pakistani bowlers could not work miracles. Mohammad Sami was the best among the Pakistani bowlers taking 3 wickets conceding 29 runs in 10 overs. Ifttikar Anjum also supported Sami by taking 2 wickets giving away 29 runs from 10 overs. Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik took 1 wicket each. Their effort was not enough to stop Ireland from surpassing the Pakistani total to score 133 runs from 41.4 overs at the loss of 7 wickets.

One of the biggest disasters

This is not the first time that a non test playing nation registered victory over a test playing nation but the fashion of win was really commendable. The three wicket victory of Ireland over Pakistan brought big shame to the Pakistani cricket. The bigger disaster is the exit of the Pakistani team from the very first round of the world cup. The Pakistan cricket team for the first time could not cross the initial hurdle of the cup on the other hand the over joyous Irish team made their first entry into the second round of the world cup.

Man of the Match

Niall John O’Brian was awarded the man of the match title for his gritty display with the willow. He scored more than half of the runs of the Irish total and single handedly guided Ireland to an emphatic victory.

Result : Ireland won by 3 wickets (with 32 balls remaining under D/L method)
