Kenya v New Zealand

20 March 2007 - Kenya v New Zealand , Gros Islet, St Lucia

Kiwis Against The Previous World Cup Semi Finalists
The Kiwis were facing the semi finalists of the last world cup. But the Kenya team was no more the one that displayed immene grit in the last world cup. Thus the match was anticipated as a cakewalk for the New Zealand team who are on a high after their victory against the Australians in the Chappell-Hadlee trophy and over England in their World Cup opener. A win from this game would also ensure the berth of the New Zealand team in the super 8 round.

Coin rolled in the favor of Kenya
Steve Tikolo won the toss for Kenya and elected to field on a pitch that looked set to support the bowlers. Batting condition in the morning was seemingly difficult and thus Kenya wanted to capitalize on the seaming nature of the wicket.

The initial jolt
The Kiwi batsmen did not start on a good note with loosing their opener Lou Vincent without even opening their scorecard. The Kenyan bowlers justified their captain’s decision by making the conditions struggling for the Kiwi batsmen.

The middle order responded to the occasion
The second wicket partnership of 105 runs between Stephen Fleming and Ross Taylor resurrected the New Zealand team from the slump. Fleming played a captain’s knock of 60 runs from 61 balls. He aptly supported the vivacious Ross Taylor who guided the New Zealand innings to a big total. He scored 85 runs from 107 balls to lead the team to a bigger total.

The other middle order batsmen supporting the cause were the hero from last game Scott Styris and McMillan. They both scored breezy half centuries to put the team back into reckoning. Scott Styris scored 63 runs from 62 balls and McMillan piled up 71 runs from 48 balls to take the total beyond 300 run mark.

The tail Enders Vettori, McCullum also chipped in with valuable contribution towards the end to add to the total score. New Zealand managed to put on a total of 331 runs at the loss of 7 wickets.

Unimpressive Kenyan Bowling
The Kenyan bowling displayed their inexperience at the international level. The bowlers except the initial triumph could not show any sign of contest. Some of the successful bowlers in the Kenyan side were the opening duo Odoyo and Ongondo. Both of them picked up 2 wickets each to put some shackle on the South African scoring rate.

Disaster at the very beginning
The Kenyan innings started off with devastation as two of their batsmen fell cheaply. The Kenyan openers Omuya and Obuya failed to rise to the occasion and tamely submitted their wicket to the Kiwi bowlers. They lost both the wickets when the scoreboard was reading just 8 runs. Thus to reach the victory line had become impossible for them.

Middle order could not work any miracles
The Kenyan middle order batting could not work any miracle to save the lost cause. However there were few of the innings like the 71 runs innings from Rabindu Shah showed some signs of resistance. Thomas Odoyo and Obuya also put up some fight at the end but was not enough to steer the course of the match but still delayed the inevitable. Kenya finished their innings by getting all out on 183 runs from 49.2 overs.

Kiwi bowlers on song
The Kiwi bowlers made full use of the conditions to polish their skills before reaching the next stage. The successful bowlers from the New Zealand squad were Mason, Franklin, and Vettori. They picked up 2 wickets each to contribute to the winning cause of New Zealand. Shane Bond also grabbed one wicket through his impressive bowling.

New Zealand enters super eight stage

The 148 run victory over the Kenyans gave Kiwis the license to enter the super eight stage of the world cup. The thumping victory though was a routine task but provided ample opportunity to the Kiwis to strengthen their position in the world cup.

Man Of The Match
RL Taylor was awarded the man of the match title for playing a useful knock up the order in the New Zealand innings.
