Ireland v Zimbabwe

15 March 2007- Ireland v Zimbabwe , Sabina Park, Kingston, JAMAICA

Pride vs. Confidence
The Caribbean air was on full charge with the 5th match of the ICC World Cup. It was Ireland v/s Zimbabwe tussle at the Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica. Ireland and Zimbabwe were teams of similar strength. Thus an exciting contest was expected. For Zimbabwe it was pride that was at stake. They had much better experience than Ireland, and wouldn’t want to loose to a debutant nation, Ireland. And for the Irish it was great beginning in the World Cup as they had given a hard time to New Zealand in the warm up match. However, Zimbabwe still looked strong.

Zimbabwe on top initially….
Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to field. It proved to be a great decision for the Zimbabweans as they were able to pluck early wickets. Thus, gaining a winning advantage in the early levels of the match. Pace bowlers of Zimbabwe bowled brilliantly taking complete advantage of the pitch and Caribbean conditions. Mpofu, though expensive overall, took the important wicket of opener W.Porterfield. Sibanda caught him for a duck. Mpofu also ended the Irish innings by taking the wicket of D.Langford. Brent and Chigumbura provided other important break throughs for Zimbabwe. Brent bowled a brilliant spell of 10 overs, one maiden, 40 runs and two wickets. Chigumbura in his six over spell bowled two maidens, gave 21 runs and took two wickets. Williams and Rainsford took one wicket each.

…but the Irish Spirit remains strong
However, opener J.Bray mentored the Irish innings. He carried his bat through out the Irish innings and scored a wonderful knock of 115 not out. His century allowed Ireland to set up a score of 221 runs, a strong total considering their batting abilities and experience.

Solid Zimbi reply…
The Zimbabwean innings were opened strongly by T.Duffin and V.Sibanda. But the partnership was soon broken when N.O’Brien caught Duffin off a beautiful delivery by Rankin in the 6th over of the Zimbabwean inning. (He was dropped twice in this very over before being caught on the last ball of the over with the score at 26.) Sibanda, then strengthened the Zimbabwean innings scoring a wonderful knock of 67. In a partnership worth 66 runs with Chibhabha he steadied the ship and marched Zimbabwe towards victory. But then Chibhabha was caught by Langford off Johnston for 12. His was the fourth Zimbabwean wicket to fall, when he played Andrew White on the backfoot and tread on his stumps. S. Wiliams scored 14 runs but was soon caught by Rankin in McCallan’s over. S. Matsikenyeri then built the Zimbabwean innings, scoring a wonderful half-century. They looked strong now and had pulled the match in their favour, ZIMBABWE was 5 for 198 in 43 overs, requiring 24 runs from 7 overs.

The glorious turn around
But cricket is full uncertainties. It was just when the Zimbabwean dressing room was rejoicing for their most awaited victory, Taylor was run out for 24 at the team score of 203. Matsikenyeri had smacked McCallan's delivery and the bowlwer gets his fingers to the ball, diverting it to the non-striker's stumps with Taylor out of the crease. End of over 44, Zimbabwe 207 for 6 wickets. Requiring 15 runs from 6 overs at an asking rate of 2.50 runs per over. Zimbabwe was still in a dominating position. The Irish team seemed to be too strong to give up. Five runs were scored off the next three overs from Johnston and Andre Botha. End of over 47, Zimbabwe 212 for 6 wickets. Botha then LBWed Brent and Zimbabwe were 7-212.

In the penultimate over, P.Utesya was caught by Morgan off a brilliant delivery by O’Brien and Zimbabwe was 8-213. The Irish comeback added great excitement and again the match was tensely poised. It was a tense situation for both teams. Mpofu was run out on the last ball of the penultimate over when Matsikenyeri stood his ground at the non-striker end. End of over 49, Zimbabwe 213 for 9 wickets. Matsikenyeri to face Andrew White. The five balls went for 8 runs (2,2,1,1,2). SCORE EQUALLED.

With just one ball, one run to win and one wicket to loose the thrill of the game had reached its peak. With nothing to rely on, Rainsford had to run as soon as the delivery was bowled, but unfortunately for Zimbabwe Matsikenyeri was missed the ball and Rainsford was run out by White. The match ended, a fantastic tie.

Memorable debut by the Irish…
J.Bray was awarded the Man of the Match for his wonderful knock of 115. It was great performance from Ireland, and they proved themselves to be a competitive nation. It was memorable debut by Ireland in the WORLD CUP of CRICKET tournament.
