Ireland v South Africa

3 April 2007- Ireland v South Africa , Guyana

The Proteas Takes On the Minnows
In the super eight round match on Tuesday the Protease was fighting it out against the surprise package of this world cup. Although not much was anticipated from this match but considering the kind of upsets this world cup has witnessed this match aroused interest. Moreover this match was essential for South Africa to book their berth at the semi finals of this tournament. Weather as usual was looming its grim face on this match and was expected to affect its fate.

Coin favored the Protease
The pitch was hard and even and thus expected to favor the batsmen. But after winning the toss South African skipper Graeme Smith decided to field first. His decision was influenced by good amount of grass on the pitch that would help in producing bounce with the ball. Thus the South African team went ahead with reliance on their successful pace battery. The idea was to make incision through the top order in the early hours of the match making good use of the pace and bounce of the pitch.

Shaky Start
Ireland as expected started very vulnerably against one of the best pace attacks in the world. In the third over of the match they lost their first wicket when the scorecard read zero for Ireland. Opener Bray fell for a golden duck after facing 9 balls. The Irish batting line up then held their wicket till the 13th over of the innings and added 31 runs to the scoreboard. Then to go was the other opener Portefield who scored 14 runs from 33 balls. The wickets kept on falling at regular interval and they had no chance to resurrect their team. The other successful batsmen of the side were EJG Morgan who scored 28 runs from 50 balls, NJ O’Brian with 25 runs from 37 balls, and AR White scoring 30 runs from 30 balls. The match as anticipated was affected by the heavy rain. The game was stalled for 2 hours with the weather condition not favoring play.

The game was reduced to 35 overs
After the game was resumed it was reduced to 35 overs. The tail enders chipped in with useful contribution. AC Botha scored 14 runs from 20 balls, Johnston made 13 runs from 14 balls, and Langford-Smith scored 17 runs from 10 balls. Ireland reached to a total of 152 runs in 35 overs loosing 8 wickets.

Duckworth Lewis came to foray

Rain had been a usual feature of this world cup and this match again was under its influence. It was the Duckworth Lewis equation that was again used to set a revised target in a rain hit match. According to the Duckworth Lewis equation South Africa was given a target of 160 runs from 35 overs. The revised target was not that heavy on South Africa and was quite achievable.

Early Jerk
The South African batting line up got the early jolt by loosing their opener AB de Villiers on the third ball of the match. AB de Villiars could not even open his scorebook before he was picked up by Rankin as he was caught by Portefield. After the initial jolt the onus was on the middle order batsmen to steer South Africa to victory.

Middle order rise to occasion
The South African middle order batting rose to the occasion and helped the South African innings to reach the target. The skipper Graeme Smith made a responsible 41 runs from 45 balls. The veteran Kallis again took the reign in his hands and chipped in with a 66 runs knock from 86 balls. He was ably supported by Ashley Prince who scored a breezy 47 runs from just 44 balls.

Straight win for South Africa
South Africa again held on to a straight win in the super eight leagues. They made 165 runs in 31.3 overs loosing just 3 wickets in the bargain. They won the match by a formidable margin of 7 wickets.

Man of the match
