Ireland v New Zealand

9 April 2007- Ireland v New Zealand, Guyana

Kiwis Marching Towards the Semi Final Berth
The super eight round matches on Monday between Ireland and New Zealand was a routine affair for the Kiwis. Although on papers it looked easy for the New Zealanders to swipe off the match but citing the number of upsets in this world cup none of the teams can be taken lightly. A win for the New Zealanders would make their way towards the semi finals easier.

Stephen Fleming won the toss
The coin rolled in favor of New Zealand and Stephen Fleming elected to field first. The pitch report suggested that the wicket will be on slower side on the later part of the match due to its brownish nature. However the morning climate was such that it would help the bowl to seam. But Fleming went ahead to give their batsmen a chance to take a go at the Irish bowlers. The idea was to shield their batsmen from spin bowling.

Dismal start
New Zealand lost their first wicket at the score of 35 runs in form of Stephen Fleming. He was caught by Portefield on the bowling of Rankin. His score was 10 runs from 11 balls. With another 24 runs added to the scorecard the other batsman Marshall was out on a stunning catch by Morgan on the bowling of Langford-Smith. He scored 16 runs from 21 balls. The next two wickets fell in quick succession and New Zealand was stranded on 118 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Scott Styris was out on 10 runs from 15 balls and Craig McMillan made 22 runs from 29 balls.

Damage Control
A 54 runs partnership between the opener Fulton and the middle order bat Jacob Oram provided some stability to the New Zealand innings. PG Fulton held one side of the wicket and scored a cautious 83 runs from 110 balls before he was lbw on the bowling of McCallan. After his wicket the other batsman in the partnership Jacob Oram soon followed suit. He scored 20 runs from 48 balls. Next to go was Daniel Vettori who made only 5 runs from 7 balls. New Zealand was reduced to 189 for 7. They again were into a dire situation and even the 200 run mark was not looking possible.

Fight back by the tail enders

The tail enders Brandon McCullum and JEC Franklin led a spirited fight back after the loss of 7 wickets. Together they added 71 runs to take New Zealand out of the slump. McCullum scored a breezy 47 runs from 37 balls before he was caught by Morgan on the bowling of Jhonston. Frankin remained unbeaten on 34 runs from 22 balls. They scored at a very brisk pace and accumulated 70 runs from the last 7 overs to take past New Zealand 250 run mark. New Zealand finished at 263 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.

Irish bowlers put up a good show…
The Irish bowlers started off well by beautifully exploiting the conditions. They picked up early wickets as well as penetrated through the middle order as well. They lost steam in the slog overs and conceded too many runs to give away the initial advantage. The successful bowlers from the Irish squad were Langford-Smith, WK McCallan, and AR White who picked up 2 scalps each.

Shaky Start
Irish batting could not take off smoothly and lost their openers very quickly. They crumbled under pressure and did not have the required amount of experience to tackle the speedster Shane Bond. First to go was Bray scoring a single from 5 balls. The other opener Portefield soon followed him to the pavilion scoring 11 runs from 22 balls. Next to get out was EJG Morgan n the score of 15 runs from 37 balls. Ireland was slumping on 35 for 3.

Middle Order stabilizes the innings
The middle order bat NJ O’Brian and KJ O’Brian fought back hard against the strong bowling of the Kiwis. They shared a partnership of 75 runs and took the team past 100 runs. KJ O’Brian first got out on the score of 49 runs from 45 balls. NJ O’Brian was out on 30 runs from 75 balls. They got reduced to 125 for 5 wickets.

Huge win for the Kiwis
The Kiwis registered a huge win over Ireland. They won the match by a formidable margin of 129 runs. The Kiwi bowlers did not give the lower order a chance to settle down in the wicket. Daniel Vettori was the most successful bowler by taking 4 scalps from 8.4 overs conceding 23 runs. The other successful bowlers were Shane Bond and JS Patel picking up 2 wickets each.

Man of the match
PG Fulton was being awarded the man of the match title for his brilliant knock at the top of the New Zealand batting order. His 83 runs knock was held responsible for New Zealand to reach a fighting total in the match.
