Bangladesh v Ireland

15 April 2007- Bangladesh v Ireland ,Bridgetown, Barbados

Irish Party Continues

In yet another interesting Super 8 encounter, debutants Ireland took on in form Bangladesh in their inspiring World Cup campaign here at the Kensington Oval. Based on its current form and performance, it was Bangladesh that was considered favorite to win this match.

Johnston wins Toss

Ireland began the match on a positive note after skipper DT Johnston won the toss and elected to bat first. The Irish strategy was clear about posting a total on the scoreboard and then putting the opposition under pressure.

Good Start for Ireland

Ireland got off to a good start as the Irish openers, JP Bray and William Porterfield put on a solid partnership of 92 runs for the first wicket. Both these batsmen concentrated more on rotating the strike rather than on hitting too many aerial or risky shots. Just when it looked that the openers would put on a century partnership, Bray was run out on 31 by a great piece of work by Saqibul Hasan.

Bangladesh Pulls back..

After Bray’s dismissal, the Irish innings hit a trough as it lost two quick wickets without piling too many runs. After Bray, there was yet another run out, the batsman this time being EJG Morgon. It was Shahadat Hossain who was instrumental in Morgon’s run out. The next Irish batsman, wicket-keeper NJ O’ Brien too did not last long and was dismissed on 10. From 92 for 1, Ireland was 128 for 3.

Key Partnership for Ireland

Just when it looked that Ireland was losing the initiative, a crucial partnership developed between Porterfield and KJ O’ Brien. Both these batsmen displayed good co-ordination to score 48 runs from 48 deliveries. Before this partnership could flourish further, Porterfield was dismissed to a good piece of work by Mashrafe Mortaza. Porterfield made an impressive 85 runs with 3 classic hits to the fence.

Crucial Knock by Irish Captain

After Porterfield’s dismissal, KJ O’ Brien and skipper DT Johnston took on the mantle of setting up a good score for their team. They put on a partnership of 39 runs when a third run-out took place, this time to dismiss KJ O’ Brien. Brien was unlucky to miss his half century and was out on 48 from 44 balls with 2 classic boundaries and 2 towering sixes. Captain Johnston too played an important knock of 30 runs from just 23 balls that included 2 fours and a six. He was dismissed by Mortaza.
It was due to a solid batting performance by Ireland that the team posted a total of 243 runs from their quota of 50 over for the loss of 7 wickets.

Lackluster bowling by Bangladesh

The Bangladeshi bowling lacked the spirit and potency previously displayed, which allowed Ireland to post a good total. Apart from Mortaza who picked up 2 wickets, none of the Bangladeshi bowlers were successful.

Poor start by Bangladesh

In contrast to the good start that Ireland made, Bangladesh faltered at the beginning of its innings to lose three early wickets for just 48 runs. The three wickets to fall were opener Shahriar Nafees, Aftab Ahmed and Saqibul Hasan. After a brief partnership between Mohammad Ashraful and Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh lost yet another wicket of Tamim Iqbal and the team looked in dire straits with the scoreboard showing 93 for 4. Although Ashraful was looking dangerous he could not capitalize on his start and was soon dismissed leaving his team tottering at 102 for 5. Ashraful made 35 from 36 balls with 5 stunning shots to the boundary and one huge six.

Ireland goes for the Kill

After Ashraful, the lone resistance from Bangladesh was shown by Captain Habibul Bashar while the rest of the Bangladeshi batsmen fell cheaply. Bashar made 32 from 57 balls before he gave up his fight and was bowled by the Irish Captain Johnston. Sensing victory, the Irish bowlers turned the heat on the Bangladeshi tail-enders and wrapped up the Bangladeshi innings at 169 from 41.2 over.

Impressive performance by the bowlers

All the Irish bowlers stuck to their task and displayed a combined effort to dismiss Bangladesh early. William Ranking who has now become habitual of picking up early wickets for Ireland picked up two wickets from 8 over. D Langford-Smith, Captain Johnston and WK McCallan all picked up two wickets respectively with McCallan being the most economical amongst the lot. AC Botha picked up one wicket.

Ireland wins comfortably

Ireland won the match by a significant margin of 74 runs to win the match and destroyed any outside chance that Bangladesh had of qualifying for the semifinals. With this win, Ireland’s ranking has shifted to the 12th position as the team has now defeated two Test playing nations, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Man of the Match

The Man of the Match was William Porterfield who top scored for Ireland with 85 runs and had a lion’s share in the Irish total of 243.
