Asian Campaign Starts The Asian campaign took off with the clash between the giant India and the underdogs Bangladesh. The match was anticipated to be a cakewalk for India and a good practice before entering into the big league.
Coin rolled in Dravid’s favor
Rahul Dravid won the toss for India and elected to bat. However the decision was debatable as the pitch was holding some moisture, which could make batting difficult. The Indian think tank thought otherwise and opted to give some practice to their batsmen.
Bangladeshi bowlers on fire
The opening bowlers of Bangladesh Mashrafe Mortaza and Syed Rasel started oozing out fire right from the first ball of the innings. They made perfect use of the conditions and unsettled the Indian innings. Mortaza was the pioneer to destroy the Indian innings with a stupendous statistics of 4 wickets for 38 runs in 9.3 overs, including 2 maiden overs.
The spinners followed suit and bowled with equal vigor to maintain their dominance over the Indian batsmen. Mohammed Rafique pierced through the middle and lower order of the Indian batting. He finished with a statistics of 10 overs 35 runs and 3 wickets. The other bowler Abdur Razzak also matched steps and had the prized wicket of Sachin Tendulkar to his name. His bowling figure read 10 overs 38 runs and 3 wickets.
Tame submission of the Indian batsmen
The Indian batsmen were clueless as to how to respond to the superlative bowling of the Bangladeshis. Virender Sehwag could not come out of his poor form and again fell cheap at an individual score of mere 2 runs. His technique again came in for doubt and his defense was completely ruptured by Mortaza. He was soon followed by the other cricketers of India, Uthappa on 9 runs, followed by Tendulkar on 7 runs and Dravid on 14 runs. India was 72 for 4 wkts at 24.1 overs.run rate just a notch below 3.0.
Dada and Yuvi the saving grace
Saurav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh then steadied the Indian inning.Their partnership added 85 runs for the fifth wicket in 18.3 overs. Ganguly scored a vigilant 66 runs by sticking to the wicket for most of the time. Yuvraj Singh made a flashy 47 runs but gave in to Abdur Razzak for the sake of accelerating the score. After Yuvraj's wicket,India lost 4 wickets in a space of 15 bowls for an addition of only 2 runs.India was 159 for 9 in 45.1 overs. The last wicket partnership between Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel added some respectability to the scorecard by scoring 32 runs.India was all out on 191 runs setting a target of 192 for the Bangladeshis to win from 50 overs.
Indomitable Bangladeshi batsmen
The Bangladeshi batsmen never let inexperience dampen their chances of winning the match. The opener Tamim Iqbal launched an onslaught against the Indian opening bowlers while Shahriar Nafees acted as a support. He was lbwed by Zaheer Khan at a score of 2 runs with Bangladesh score at 24. Tamim’s superfluous shot making had telling impact on the pacers and soon they lost all sense of line and length. His act was well supported by the batsmen to follow Mushfiqur Rahim. Tamim made a breezy 51 runs from 53 balls. Mushfiqur Rahim remaind unbeaten on 56 runs from 107 balls and he was supported by Saqibul Hassan who made 53 runs off 86 balls.
Hapless Indian bowlers
The Indian bowlers, even though bowling to the international standards, had no game plan . They looked utmost complacent against a side whom they took very lightly. None of the bowlers found their rhythm. Zaheer Khan conceded 41 runs of 9 overs with 1 wicket. In the 11th over of the inning, he got struck for 15 runs(one 6's,two 4's and a single) by Tamin Iqbal. Munaf Patel gave away 39 runs in 8.3 overs bagging two wickets. Sehwag acting as a part time bowler conceded 17 runs in 5 overs taking two wickets.
The first “surprise” in the world cup
Bangladesh took 48.3 overs to register their first victory in this world cup. This was the first disaster of the cup as the underdogs like Bangladesh took India for a ride. Bangladesh finished off on 192 runs for 5 wickets to score an emphatic win - 5 wickets win with 9 balls remaining - over India.
Man of the Match
Mashrafe Bin Mortaza was awarded the man of the match title for his splendid spell with the ball. His initial incision through the Indian top order never let the Indian batsmen settle down. His efforts put Bangladesh into reckoning and they are now being touted as the dark horse of this world cup.
