The weather was showing no signs of disrupting the match a thus audience were pouring in with full swing to enjoy a great day of cricket.

Coin rolled in favor of England
Michael Vaughn won the toss for England and elected to field first. He decision was taken citing the conditions of the pitch, which had shown signs to support seam bowling in the early hours of the match. They wanted to capitalize with their strong bowling attack.

Steady Start
Sri Lanka headed for a steady start with both the openers clicking with the willow. They accumulated 37 runs in 7 overs. But in the last ball of he eight over Jayasuriya was clean bowled by Mahmood. He moved to the pavilion with a score of 25 runs from 26 balls. The solid start however could not be of much help to the batsman to follow. Sangakkara spent another ten overs at the crease but only contribute 17 runs to the scoreboard, which he made from 33 balls.

Captain’s knock
After the fall of two wickets the reins in the middle were taken over by the Lanka skipper. The other opener Tharanga continued to hold his position at the middle. They both got involved in a partnership of 91 runs that was instrumental in resurrecting the Sri Lankan team from the slump. Tharanga made a cautious 62 runs from 103 balls and stayed at the crease till the 35th over. The Lankan skipper Jayawardene scored a breezy 56 runs from 61 balls to enhance the scoring rate. The other batsmen chipping in with valuable contribution were LPC Silva scoring 24 runs from 37 balls and Russell Arnold who made a breezy 20 runs from 22 balls.

Mahmood on fire

The pace battery of England responded well to the need of the hour and stuck to a good line and length throughout the innings. Mahmood was the best among the lot by picking up 4 wickets giving away 50 runs in 9 overs. The other successful bowler of the side was the disgraced vice captain Andrew Flintoff who incised through the Lankan batting line up to make a bowling statistics of 3 wickets for 35 runs in 10 overs.
