England v New Zealand

16 March 2007- England v New Zealand , Gros Islet, St Lucia

Clash of the Titans
The 6th match of the 2007 World Cup was played between two likely contenders of the title. New Zealand with their recent success against Australia and England with a bunch of very talented cricketers were worthy opponents playing their first match of the cup. The fate of the match was shadowed by heavy rainfall on the morning of the match. However the weather was in the favor of the match although it was delayed by 30 minutes.

Fleming won the toss
There was a little confusion before the toss when the teamsheets were not exchanged before the toss by the captions . The coin rolled in the favor of the New Zealand caption Stephen Fleming. The New Zealand captain elected to field citing the moisture content of the field due to the rain last night. The fast bowlers were sure to get some assistance from the moisture laden pitch.

Disastrous start
The English team received a jolt at the very start of the match when on and the second delivery of the day the opner EdJoyce was caught by the wicket keeper B.Mc Cillium and the bowling of James Fraklen)the first delivery was a noball). The England kept on loosing wicket on regular interval and were striving hard on 52 runs for 3 wickets after 15.3 overs.

Stabilization of the innings
The two middle order batsmen Paul Collingwood and Kevin Pietersen responded to the occasion and held wicket for a while. They worked out a partnership of 81 runs, which provided stability to the English innings. Kevin Pietersen scored 60 runs from 92 balls and Paul Collingwood made 31 runs of 54 balls to breathe life into their innings. The hopes of the English team of a bigger score was marred by the dismissal of the star all rounder Andrew Flintoff on duck. From 133/4 they were down to 138/7The tail-enders Nixon and Plunkett made good use of the slog overs to put on a fighting total of 209. Nixon scored 42 runs of 41 deliveries and Plunkett made 29 runs of 34 balls.

The name is Bond
Shane Bond the strike Kiwi bowler again proved fatal to the opposition. He not only picked up two wickets but with his perfect line and length did not give opposition the liberty to score runs. Bond got the prized wicket of Andre Flintoff that proved to be a major setback to the English innings. His economy rate of 1.9 speaks volumes of the fire oozing out from his bowling.

New Zealand starts badly too…
The Kiwi openers made an easy target seemingly tough by some insensible shot selection. They got out cheaply to be stranded at 19 runs for 3 wickets. First to go was the opener Lou Vincent followed by Ross Taylor, both for a duck. The next to go was the Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming on 7 runs facing 11 deliveries. The New Zealand innings was deep down into trouble and there had to be a miracle to save them.

Resurrection of the Kiwi innings
The Kiwi innings required Scott Styris to provide stability. He played the role of the anchor and bailed the New Zealand team out of the slump. He stayed at the crease till the end of the innings and finished the match in the favor of New Zealand. He was well supported by Craig McMillan and Jacob Oram. Styris and McMillan put up a partnership of 53 runs. After the fall of McMillan, off Monty Panesar, with 72 runs on the board, England were again back into the reckoning but their happiness was short lived. The next batsman Jacob Oram along with Styris put on a partnership of 138 runs to guide New Zealand to a seemingly easy victory with 9 overs to spare.

The winning boost
The six-wicket win of New Zealand over England gave them a huge boost before entering the later stages of the World Cup. New Zealand made 210 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 41 overs.

Man of the Match
Scott Styris was aptly selected the man of the match with his good show both with the bat and the ball. He was the only choice for the title with 87 runs and 2 wickets in his kitty.
