ICC World Cup - 23rd Match, Group C
|
| |
England v Kenya |
|
|
| |
The Beausejour Stadium, Gross Islet, St. Lucia witnessed the tussle between Kenya and England on Saturday. For the Kenyan’s to take on the much experienced English side was much of a prestige issue. Both teams came out with a zest to capture the field with their performances in the 23rd match of the ICC World Cup of Cricket 2007.
The toss:
With overnight rain and constant showers the match started late and was shortened to a 43 over a side game. The toss had much importance for the Kenyan’s who hoped to give a fitting performance against the English. The Kenyan captain, Steve Tikolo and the English captain, Michael Vaughan came on to the field for the much awaited toss. Kenya won the toss and considering the circumstances chose to bat first only hoping that the pitch would be in their favor. For the England team, even the thought of losing against a team like Kenya would be shattering their confidence. The English and the Kenyan’s played the last ICC World Cup match in 1999 where the England team defeated the Kenyans at Canterbury. The Kenyans were eager in settling the score in the match at St. Lucia with this match.
The Kenyan’s start:
The Kenyan Openers M Ouma and Ravindu Shah started off on a rather slow note before R Shah was bowled for 4in the 5th over. James Anderson get both the openers Ouma was out in the 11th over. Suji was next to go, caught by the captain Michael Vaughan off a Sajid Mahmood ball. He made only 14 runs for his team. Kenya was 73 for 3 wkts(17.4 over). The captain Steve Tikolo then took over and scored the maximum runs for his team. Tikolo scored 76 runs off 97 balls. His innings ended when Flintoff clean bowled him in the 41st over. The Kenyan innings never got the impetus it needed. The three run outs of C Obuya, L Onyango and P Ongondo didn’t help either. The Kenyan innings ended on the last ball of the inning at the score 177 runs from 43 overs.
The English March:
After the Kenyan innings the English were sure of powering the game. The openers Ed Joyce and M Vaughan walked on to the field with complete confidence. But unfortunately the captain was caught out on the fourth ball that he faced. M Vaughan went off the field with scoring just 1 run for his side and England at the score of 12 runs on the first ball of the fourth over.
The next to come in was I Bell who partnered Ed Joyce and contributed 16 Runs for his team. Ed Joyce scored 75 runs for his team off 90 balls. His was the third Wkt to fall at the England score of 155(27.1 over). Then Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood partnership finished the match for the Poms. Pietersen scored 56 runs and Collingwood made 18.
Thus, the team effort only helped a comfortable 7-wicket victory for the English team in just 33 overs.
Man of the Match:
Ed Joyce was the unanimous choice for the man of the match. His 75 runs assured victory for the England team. Also, these runs were the energy boosters for the upcoming Super 8 matches where England would take on the best teams of the world.
