Canada v England |

| |
England fighting for its survival in the World Cup took on Canada at St Lucia. For England winning against Canada was every important due to their defeat against New Zealand. For Canada considering victories of Ireland and Bangladesh, they were keen to find themselves a place in the same league. Canadian captain John Davison winning the toss elected to field.
England Starts Steady
Openers Ed Joyce and Michael Vaughan gave a good start to the English innings. Michael Vaughan scored 45 in 64 balls, which included 7 fours. He was caught by the Canadian captain J Davidson on bowling of A Samad. 101/1, Ian Bell followed his captain to the crease. After standing a partnership of 52 runs, Ian Bell was caught by G Codrington on bowling of Dhaniram at 28.
Dhaniram Strikes for Canada
Soon then when England was at 160, Dhaniram clean bowled Ed Joyce. Not standing for long Kevin Pieterson was also send to the pavilion at the score of 5. He was caught and bowled by Dhaniram. Dhaniram bowled a crucial spell for Canada taking 3 wickets, giving 41 runs in 10 over.
Bopara – Collingwood Fireworks
Coming to bat in the 36th over Ravinder Bopara in a quick partnership with Paul Collingwood speeded the English run rate. Ravinder Bopara and Paul Collingwood put up an important 82 runs from 65 bowls for the fifth wicket partnership. With Collingwood striking the ball in all directions of the ground, Ravinder Bopara gave him a steady stand. Bopara was clean bowled in the 46th over by Codrington when he was at the score of 29. He faced thirty balls hitting 4 boundaries. Next to come was Jamie Dalrymle, but lost his wicket to A Cummins at the score of 2. Paul Collingwood and wicket keeper Paul Nixon then took the English innings score to 279 for the loss of 6 wickets in 50 overs.
Canadian batting stumbles
Canadian captain John Davison and Geoff Barnett opened the Canadian innings. However, not able to survive the English pace Geoff Barnett was clean bold by Plunkett at score of 7, and Canada were 8 for loss of one wicket. Next to come was wicket keeper batsman Ashish Bagai. Canadian inexperience was clearly evident from the way they were batting. Ashish Bagai soon lost his wicket at the Canadian score of 22, caught K.Pieterson, bowled Plunkett. He scored 6 runs in 11 balls. In order to keep up with the run rate John Davison lost his wicket in the 11th over when Canada was at 51. Davison scored 21 runs of 25 balls. The Canadian innings slowed down since then and they just managed to score 14 runs in next 6 over. It was some good bowling by the English bowlers, which was rewarded in form of a wicket of Ian Billcliff. Bopara bowled him out at the score of 20.
Well-tried Samad, Mulla
Ashif Mulla and Abdool Samad then anchored the Canadian innings from 65 for 4 in 17 over. They both put up a 96 runs partnership from 106 balls. It was good running between the wickets and some hitting as well from both of them. But the required run rate was creeping fast by then. Trying to meet the required run rate Ashif Mulla was stumped by P Nixon on bowling of Bopara. He scored a brilliant 58 from 60 balls hitting 7 fours and 1 six. In the very next over Abdool Samad was LBWed by Panesar. He scored 36 of 67 balls. Canada at the end of 36th over was reduced to 6/161. With a huge run rate to chase and half team in the pavilion the game was in favour of England. Inspite of some good batting by Desmond Chumney and George Codrington, England won the match by 51 runs. Canadian innings ceased at 228 for 7 in 50 over.
Paul Collingwood was awarded the Man of the Match. Though England won the match, they failed to impress.
