The Minnows
The third match of the World Cup Cricket 2007 was touted to be a more thrilling match than the other one played on that day. This is because both the countries playing were non-test playing nations. However Kenya always stood a better ground with more experience under their belt. After their successful run at the last world cup Kenya is termed as the surprise package of the world cup compared to Canada.
Kenya elected to field
The luck was with the Kenyan captain Steve Tikolo who won the toss. Thus with a successful roll of the coin Steve Tikolo opted to put the opposition on the pitch to bat. The decision was taken citing the bouncy nature of the pitch. They anticipated the pitch to behave erratically during the morning session of the match.
Steady start
In the initial stages of the match the Canadian batsmen took the challenge of standing against a difficult condition. The firm starts by the openers Geoff Barnett and Abdool Samad took Canada to a position of 40 runs for no loss. They were very cautiously seeing the ball off. They did not dash off but were briskly adding to the scoreboard to pile up a fighting total.
Kenyans bowlers on a song
The Canadian batsmen however could not resist the Kenyan bowlers for long. On the tenth over of the match Thomas Odoyo managed to deceive A Samad on 15 runs to get him caught at the hands of the captain Steve Tikolo. The next to go was the fellow opener Barnett through a stunning catch by Tanmay Mishra on the bowling of Peter Ondongo. The Kenyan bowlers made further damage to the top order of Canada by Hiren Vaidya claiming the wicket of Ashish Bagai on 19 runs. The last hope for the Canadian team John Davison, the superhero from the previous world cup fell prey to the flight given by the bowler Kamande. The rest of the batsmen queued behind to leave Canada tattered at a meager total of 199 runs. Although they stayed at the wicket for the complete 50 overs but could not make much use of their presence at the middle.
Smelling Victory
The Kenyan openers sensed victory right in the beginning of the second innings and started the innings by smashing the ball all round the stadium. Ouma being the more prominent partner in the opening slot started commanding the Canadian bowlers by guiding the ball out of the boundary line.
Few hiccups
The party of the Kenyan openers by AC Cummins by getting him caught at the hands of A Bagai when he was on 4 runs. The next batsman Rabindu Shah fell on a quick succession on 6 runs at the bowling of U Bhatti. This brought a sensation to the Kenyan camp as the match was evenly poised and could have shifted balance to any side. At the end of 13th over, Kenya was at 52 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. Runs required to achieve the target was 148 and the asking rate was 4.00 runs per over.
Captain’s knock
Captain Steve Tikolo again proved his mettle by resurrecting the team from the slump. The steady partnership between Ouma and the captain gave the much-needed stability to the Kenyan innings. Ouma struck a half-century and as Kenya was cruising towards the victory, it was interrupted by a delivery from Dhaniram. MA Ouma was caught by AA Mulla and bowled by Dhaniram when he was on 58 runs from 89 deliveries. The loss of the key player however did not deter Steve Tikolo from accomplishment of the mission.
