Bermuda v India

19 March 2007 - Bermuda v India , Port of Spain, Trinidad

The Asian Tigers in the Bermuda Triangle
This match although did not have much importance while deciding upon the World Cup schedule, but the stunning victory by Bangladesh over India earned it the required dignity. The Indians fans were eagerly waiting for this match, as it was the only gateway for the team to remain in the world cup. Apart from winning this match India had to win by a huge margin in order to equal the net run rate scored by the other teams in their group.

Bermudans decided to exploit the conditions
Bermuda won the toss in a condition, where seamers would love to take the attack to the batsmen. Thus very aptly they decided to exploit the conditions to get on to the Indian batsmen. India was put to bat first in the moist and overcast conditions.

A steady start
The Indian innings started with a shock when the opener Robin Utthappa fell cheaply for just 3 runs. D Leverock caught him off the bowling of M Jones. Virender Sehwag the next man to come in was under tremendous pressure to perform because of his sustained failure. However this did not deter the batsmen from standing their grounds against the minnows and that too scoring at a brisk pace.

Viru proves a point in a stunning partnership
Virender Sehwag and Saurav Ganguly had to make their presence in the team justified. They both were successful in doing it and that too in style. They initially took time to settle and then started blasting off the Bermudan bowling attack. Sehwag was at his devastating self and Ganguly was holding the wicket at the other end. They both worked out a partnership of 202 runs before Sehwag fell for 114 runs in 87 balls hitting 17 boundaries(four) and 3 over the boundaries(six). The next to go was Saurav Ganguly on 89 runs from 114 balls while attempting to hit a big one.

Run feast in the slog over
Once the Indian innings was nearing end the Indian batsmen started making mockery of the Bermudan bowling with flurry of shots all around the park. The pioneer was Yuvraj Singh scored 83 runs of 46 runs by hitting 7 sixes and 3 boundaries. He took the Bermudan bowlers for a ride with his might with the willow. Tendulkar also joined the party by his trademark reverse sweep, which he used as an instrument to guile the Bermudan bowlers. They both put on a partnership of 122 runs in mere 10 overs! Yuvraj got out holing out at long off but Tendulkar remained unbeaten on 57 runs from 29 balls.

Biggest total in the history of world cup
India proved that they still have one of the most formidable batting lines up in the world. They registered a total of 413 runs for the loss of five wickets, which is the highest total scored in any match played in the history of world cup cricket. They also equaled the record of scoring maximum number of sixes in an innings by hitting 18 sixes.

Setting out for an impossible task
The Bermudan batsmen set out to achieve an impossible task. They lost their first wicket in the very first over with the scoreboard reading one. The target was unachievable and they showed no signs of contest. Most of the Bermudan batsmen failed to reach the double figure except for Hemp, Borden and Minors. DL Hemp did put some resistance with a gritty 76 runs not out from 105 balls. His innings delayed the inevitable to 43.1 overs while Bermuda managed to put a total of 156 runs.

Old fox back into action
Anil Kumble made his return to the one-day cricket remarkable by picking up a wicket each from his first two overs. He finished with a bowling statistics of 3 wickets for 38 runs from 9.1 overs. The other successful bowlers of the Indian squad were Agarkar with 3 wickets 38 runs, Zaheer Khan with 2 wickets from 32 runs, Munaf Patel and Sachin Tendulkar picking a wicket each.

Biggest ever win
India won by a margin of 257 runs, which is recorded as the biggest ever-winning margin in the history of cricket. The margin of win was of prime importance for the Indian side in order to equal the net run rate with Sri Lanka the top ranker in the group. Thus with the emphatic win they raised a hope for their advancement to the next stage of the world cup.

Man of the Match
Virender Sehwag was under constant scrutiny from the cricket board and the fans alike. He definitely made a come back and what better way than earning the man of the match title for it.
