Bangladesh v South Africa

7 April 2007- Bangladesh v South Africa , Guyana

Bangladeshi Tigers on Spree
The Super Eight match on Saturday was anticipated as just another practice match for the South African team by the experts. The surprise win of Bangladesh over India was not given much importance as it was considered as another fluke. The Protease with their good run in the world cup were expecting to overpower the Bangladeshis to gain solid ground in the second round of the world cup.

Protease got lucky with the coin
The coin rolled in the favor of Graeme Smith and he elected to field first. Citing the conditions, which were favoring seam bowling he chose to give his pacers a chance to demolish the Bangla batting. The pitch however showed the tendency to slow down on the later part of the game but the Protease think tank did not attach much importance to it.

Steady opening partnership
Bangladesh opened their batting to solid start with the opening partnership mounting to 42 runs in 14 overs. The openers Javed Omar and Tamim Iqbal hanged on to the crease and were playing the ball according to the merit. Javed was first to get out on the score of 17 runs from 41 balls. He was soon followed to the pavilion by the Bangladeshi skipper Habibul Bashar. Habibul Bashar scored 5 runs from 14 deliveries. The opener showed some signs of aggression by guiding 6 balls for four runs. But his over ambitious attempt to hit a straight ball got him caught by the wicketkeeper. He scored 38 runs from 59 balls during his 90 minutes stay at the wicket. Soon to follow suit was Saqibul Hasan who added 9 runs to the scoreboard from 27 balls before giving catch to the South African skipper. Bangladesh was stranded at 84 runs at the loss of 4 wickets.

Ashraful resurrects the inning
Middle order batsman Mohammed Ashraful and Aftab Ahmed were adamant on doing damage control by playing a gritty knock. They were not only making amendments but were keen on posting a fighting total. They were involved in a partnership of 76 runs, which was scored almost run a ball. Ahmed was removed by Ntini when the scoreboard read 160 for Bangladesh. He scored 35 runs from 43 balls hitting 2 sixes and 2 boundaries. The tail ender Mortaza also shined with the willow by engaging into a partnership of 54 runs along with Ashraful. He put on a useful 25 runs from 16 balls with 3 boundaries and 1 six to his kitty. The last wicket to fall for Bangladesh was of Mohammed Ashraful when their total score was 248 runs. Ashraful played a valiant knock of 87 runs from 83 balls and had scored 12 boundaries during his stay at the wicket. Bangladesh ended with a fighting total of 251 runs from 50 overs at the loss of 8 wickets.

Andre Nel stole the show

Andre Nel projected the best bowling figure among the South African bowlers. He picked up 5 scalps at the cost of 45 runs from 10 overs in the match. The old warhorse Shaun Pollock although could not pick up any wicket but proved to be highly economical by giving away just 25 runs from his quota of 10 overs. The other successful bowlers were Ntini and Kallis who took 1 wicket each in the Bangladeshi innings.

Shaky start by the Protease
The South African openers could not open the innings with their regular big hits all over the park. The slow start by the openers was a reflection of the discomfiture of the South African batsmen with the Bangladeshi bowlers. The South African skipper fell cheaply at the aggregate score of 18 runs from 5.4 overs. He made 12 runs from 24 balls during his 26 minutes stay at the wicket. Next to follow he to the pavilion was Kallis who showed some signs of resistance with a knock of 32 run from 36 balls. After Bangladesh picked up the other opener AB de Villiars and middle order bat Prince in quick succession the Protease were stranded on 67 runs at the loss of 4 wickets

Tame submission of the South African batsmen
The South African batsmen were completely clueless as to how to respond to the slow nature of the pitch. Moreover the Bangladeshi spinners were spot on giving them no room to free their hands and get adjusted to the conditions. The middle order and the lower order batting of South Africa failed miserably. The only man standing was Gibbs who was not out at the score of 56 runs from 59 balls.

Bangla spinners on song
Bangladeshi spinners very aptly exploited the conditions and stuck to their game plan of bringing the Protease batsmen to their front foot. The spinners shared 6 wickets among themselves to demolish the South African batting. The most successful among the lot was Abdur Razzak who picked up 3 wickets giving away 25 runs from 9.4 overs. The other spinners Saqibul Hasan took 2 wickets and Mohammad Rafique picked 1 wicket to support the cause of a bangle victory. The pacer Syed Rasel took two wickets from the innings at the cost of 41 runs.

Bangladesh script another historic win
Bangladesh sprang another surprise after their victory over India. They clinched a 67 runs victory over the South Africans to record another upset at this world cup. They are showing the signs of emerging as a strong cricketing nation. They strengthen their position at the second round of the world cup by packing off the South African team for just 184 runs. Their win may help them to earn a position in the next round of the world cup.

Man of the match
Mohammed Ashraful was invested with the title of man of the match. He was aptly chosen for the award for not only taking out the Bangladeshi innings from the slump but stuck to his task to post a fighting total, which eventually became instrumental in their victory.
