Bangladesh v New Zealand

2 April 2007- Bangladesh v New Zealand , North Sound, Antigua

Kiwis Fly High
Monday saw New Zealand take on minnows Bangladesh in yet another Super 8 encounter at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium at St. Johns. Although, the Kiwis were the clear favorites to win the encounter, Bangladesh on the other hand was hoping that it creates more upsets and repeats the memorable performance that it displayed against India.

New Zealand wins Toss
The New Zealand Captain Stephen Fleming got lucky and won the toss and put Bangladesh in to bat first. Fleming’s decision was hailed by all the experts as the pitch showed clear signs of seam movement in the early part of the day and seemed to be easing out and help the batsmen in the latter part of the day.

Bangladesh Batsman Falter
It was always going to be difficult for the Bangladeshis to handle the disciplined seam attack of the Kiwis. Also, the batsmen required to display more character and technical perfection to deal with the New Zealand bowling on a seaming wicket. However, the Bangladeshis could not deliver the goods and displayed a poor batting performance. The Kiwi bowlers were ably supported by the usual high quality fielding leaving no opportunity for Bangladesh to score runs at a fast pace.

All the New Zealand bowlers were impressive and never allowed the Bangladeshis to relax. However, not all was easy for the Kiwis. The black caps had to contend with the loss of two of their frontline bowlers within the first 20 overs of the Bangladesh innings.

New Zealand lost Michael Mason due to a calf strain after Mason had bowled just 9 deliveries while the other major loss was of James Franklin who had to leave the field due to migraine after finishing six overs. However, the loss of two main bowlers did not affect New Zealand as the other bowlers made up for the loss.

It was Jacob Oram and Shane Bond who stifled the Bangladeshi batsmen and pressurized them. Oram took three wickets while Bond took two wickets. However, the most successful bowler for New Zealand was Scott Styris who took four wickets.

None of the Bangladeshi batsmen could manage a high score and help their ream in reaching a respectable total. Bangladesh would have been bundled out for less than 150 runs had it not been for an inspiring innings by Mohammad Rafique. Rafique scored 30 runs with 1 four and 2 sixes that allowed his team to reach to 174 runs in 48.3 overs. Rafique remained unbeaten and was unlucky to run out of partners.

Easy Target for the Kiwis

The total of 174 never seemed daunting for the New Zealand line up and after some dominating batting by skipper Stephen Fleming and HJH Marshall, the target became even easier. It was the Kiwi Captain, Fleming who led from the front scored his eighth one-day century and led his team to victory.

Captain’s Knock

New Zealand Captain, Stephen Fleming led the Kiwi reply and slammed an unbeaten 102 to take his team to victory. Fleming, who has admitted that he is in the golden phase of his batting career timed the ball beautifully and dominated the Bangladeshi bowling throughout. Fleming scored 102 runs from 92 balls with 10 classic boundaries and 3 towering sixes. Fleming was well supported by HJH Marshall who scored an unbeaten half century. Fleming and Marshall put on a partnership of 134 runs, which was enough for the team to reach the target set by Bangladesh.

In fact, the Kiwis reached home in just the 30th over for the loss of just one wicket, that of Peter Fulton. It was Marshall who finished the match in style and hit a huge six that helped him to reach his fifty and also led his team to victory. New Zealand’s final total was 178 runs in 29.2 overs for the loss of one wicket winning the match by a huge margin of 9 wickets.

Kiwis Share Top Spot
It was a tough decision for the adjudicators to select the Man of the Match and it was a tough call between skipper Fleming and Shane Bond. However, it was the express bowler from New Zealand, Shane Bond who won the Man of the Match award for a brilliant bowling display. His figures read 10 overs, 4 maidens, 2 wickets by giving just 15 runs.

With this win New Zealand now share the premier position in the points table with world champions Australia. Both these teams have not lost a single match in the World Cup till now.
