West Indies v Australia

27, 28 March 2007 - West Indies v Australia,North Sound, Antigua

The World Cup Enters The Next Round
The 2007 cricket world cup reached the super eight stage with two likely contenders Australia and West Indies locking horns. Two top teams from each of the group advanced to this stage. All the teams from each group will play with all the teams from the other groups. Four teams from this round will advance to the semi finals.

Brian Lara got lucky with the coin
Brian Lara won the toss for West Indies in the crucial second round match. West Indies opted to field first on a damp pitch where they expected the ball to swing in the initial overs. The skipper respond faith in his pacers.

West Indian pacers strike
In the fifth over of the match Dinesh Ramdin caught Adam Gilchrist off the bowling of Powell. The West Indian pacers proved their captain right. Adam Gilchrist scored 7 runs from 9 balls. This initial setback however did not dampen the indomitable Australian spirit.

Hayden started his run feast
After the fall of Gilchrist, the other opener Mattlew Hayden paired up with skipper Ricky Ponting and started demolishing the West Indian attack in their trademark style. Together they added 66 runs to the score in quick time before Ponting was run out for 35 off 36 balls from a brilliant direct hit by Sarwan.

The next batsman was Michael Clarke who kept the scoreboard ticking. Michael Clarke scored 41 runs from 47 balls before he was trapped leg before wicket by Dwayne Bravo. But the main draw in the Australian innings was Matt Hayden who single handedly scored almost half of the overall score. Hayden was finally caught by Samuels off the bowling of Bravo but not before he treated the spectators to 14 boundaries and 4 sixes. He made 158 runs from 143 balls. Shane Watson hit 33 runs from 26 balls towards the end of the innings to catapult the Aussie score to 322 for 6.

Another feather in Australia’s cap
Australia due to the histrionics of Mattlew Hayden again surpassed the score of 300 runs. Australia already achieved the feat of scoring a total of more than 300 runs in their 6th consecutive game! They added to their world record of 300+ scores in consecutive games, twice against New Zealand, once each against Scotland, Netherlands, South Africa and now West Indies.

Clueless West Indian bowling
The West Indian bowling was completely hapless in front of the ruthless Australian batting attack. The successful bowlers among the lot were Darren Powell who took 2 wickets for 53 runs from 10 overs. The other successful bowler was Dwayne Bravo with 2 wickets for 49 runs from 7 overs.

West Indian innings marred by rain
The West Indian innings could not take off due to heavy rains at the ground during lunch time and later as well. Atleast 20 overs have to be played in an innings for the application of Duckworth Lewis Method. However there is a reserve day for each of the match in this Cricket World Cup.

The Roll Over Match
The match from the previous day continued on the reserve day.

Australian bowlers on song
The Australian pace attack once again proved that they are among the best in the world. The opening pair very aptly exploited the conditions, which was damp and supported swing. Shaun Tait started daunting the top order by picking up Chanderpaul in the 4th over. The incision into the top order raised the spirits of the rest of the bowling attack. Glenn McGrath the veteran pace bowler lodged his attack against the middle order by taking the wicket of Chris Gayle in the 8th over of the match. McGrath scalped another two wickets in the match taking his tally to 3 wickets for 31 runs in 8 overs. The other successful pacer was Shaun Tait with 2 wickets from 7.3 overs giving away 43 runs.

Pace and spin in tandem
The spinners equally responded to the pacers by taking up 3 wickets from the innings. Brad Hogg continued his good run at the world cup and wiped off the West Indian innings by picking up the prize scalp of Brian Lara. The other who fell prey to the fox was Ramnaresh Sarwan and Smith. Brad Hogg finished off with a bowling statistics of 3 wickets for 56 runs in 10 overs. The other bowlers causing damage to the West Indian batsmen were Andrew Symonds and Nathan Bracken with 1 wicket each.

West Indian batting lacked discipline
Right from the very start of the innings the West Indies batting line up was clueless about how to approach the mammoth target posted by Australia. They were hapless about confronting the superior Australian attack. Both the openers fell cheaply with Chris Gayle scoring 2 runs and Shivnaraeine Chandrapaul scoring 5 runs during his stay at the wicket. They were soon followed by Samuels who added 4 runs to the scorecard. Later on some resistance was put up by the batting maestro Brian Lara and Ramnaresh Sarwan. Lara scored 77 runs and Sarwan managed to pull off 29 runs from their stay at the wicket. Dinesh Ramdin also responded with a half century by scoring 52 runs from 43 balls.

Australia scores another thumping win
Australia started their campaign at the super eight successfully by winning the match by a considerable margin of 103 runs. The West Indies was mauled by the superfluous performance of the Australians.

Man Of the Match
The man of the match title went to Mattlew Hayden for his superlative batting performance. He scored 158 runs from 143 balls.
